This seminar is an introduction aimed at students to a specialized topic that is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the global telecommunications industry. It will cover the fundamentals of standard-setting and why it is necessary to communications technologies, the problems created by standard essential patents in the market, the difficulties in resolving global licensing disputes under national laws, the problems arising from arbitrating such disputes, and the challenges of determining what is FRAND.
Dr. Barbara Lauriat is Senior Lecturer in Law at King’s College London and currently an NDIAS/ND TEC Fellow at Notre Dame. She is also a Research Fellow of the Oxford Intellectual Property Research Centre and a 20/21 Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard.
